Minimalist Retro Cooking Blog
Oct 21, 2025
Project Goals
Design a minimalist, retro cooking blog with a sketchy, hand-drawn style.
Make navigation easy and recipes straightforward to find and read.
Create recipe pages with comment sections and share buttons.
Leave space on recipe pages for future advertisement placements.
Process
The first step was to create a sitemap to determine the website layout. We decided against a ‘contact’ or ‘about’ page and instead included that information as sections on the homepage. We decided against a real hero section, instead opting to have new recipes appear as soon as the user visits the site.
The visual styling took a while to get right. We went through a few different iterations of retro styles until we settled on the simple outlines and bold hover animations. We also chose to use a two tone palette of green and blue, alongside the off-white backgrounds to complete the ‘flash game’ style retro look.
I set up a simple CMS system that allowed the client to easily add their own recipes. Each recipe page in the CMS has its own simple comment section, allowing users to engage without needing an account.
